The monkey ranks 9th of the 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac. Each year is related to an animal sign according to a 12-year-cycle of the Chinese Lunar Calendar (CLC) which, unlike the Gregorian and Julian calendar years, the CLC new year will be February 8th, 2016. Years of the monkey, from this eastern tradition, include 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016 and 2028.
From this ancient folklore as narrated by Dubois (2004), people born in a year of the monkey are witty, mischievous, curious, naughty, players, crafty opportunists, fast learners, sly, inquisitive and restless but intelligent with a magnetic personality.
The One-Global village we’ve found ourselves a part of in 2016 has compelled people of all walks of life to become accustomed to ‘foreign’ cultures with little or no knowledge of their origins.
Tragically, many people around the world religiously believe in the Zodiac horoscope or astrology in the broader sense to predict the outcome of their day/week/month/year/life. Some go to the extent of tattooing ‘their’ zodiac signs on their body and proudly profess, “I am a Cancer – The Crab (June 21 – July 22), for example. Unawares that they could be invoking cancer or any other curse in their lives by defining themselves by ‘their’ horoscope.
Such believers of incantation, charm and spells believe life is symbolic and they look for interpreters and sign readers in the name of palm chirologists. Others book for private visits with their pastors, priests and spiritual gurus to prophesy good tidings and command a blessed outcome in a new year.
As we wish each other blessings for 2016, let me point out that Fortune Tellers are neither biblically sound nor scientifically accurate. From a Biblical standpoint, we are warned against worshipping the sun, moon and stars (Deut 4:19) and against reading the future in the stars (Jer 10:2) which is the basis of horoscope. In-fact, Zechariah (10:2) indicated that fortune-tellers give comfort in vain.
From a scientific examination, the natural life is governed by laws. To limit my discourse today, I will refresh our curious minds with two natural laws originally written by Sir Isaac Newton. These laws do work whether you believe in them or not. For instance, whether you believe in gravity or not is immaterial. The fact remains that if you jump down from the roof of a sky scrapper, you will still fall down irrespective of your age, colour, gender, status or level of madness.
The 1st law of motion, popularly known as the law of inertia postulates that an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced (external) force. This means that there is a natural tendency of objects to keep on doing what they’re doing indefinitely. All objects resist changes in their state of motion. In the absence of an unbalanced force, an object in motion will maintain this state of motion.
What is true for bodies in the universe is true for most human beings. In a sense, the law of inertia teaches us that change is not automatic. Change is caused to happen. That’s why some people year in year out; they still believe the positive prophesies of their lives prospering even though they (themselves) are doing nothing to change their situation. What a sad state of affairs?
No wonder it has been said, ‘madness is doing the same thing, the same way and expecting different results’. To make a solid and lasting positive difference in 2016, we must deliberately avoid being trapped by the regret of the past and the routine of the present. We need to give critical thought on changing our tomorrow early in the year. This we will achieve by ensuring that the greatest pull in our lives is the pull of a brighter future – not the past that pulls us back and not the pull of gravity (present) that keeps us where we are.
To refresh your inquisitive minds, Newtonian 3rd law of motion simply states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite re-action force. Social interpretation: outputs are determined by inputs; you reap what you sow. I, therefore, fervently refuse to believe that 2016 is a monkey year! I draw my life graph by the grace of God. Astrology does not determine my fate or my fortunes in 2016 or any other year for that matter.
If I eat so much today, I chose to weigh so much tomorrow. As a career person, my vocational growth will be proportionate to my effort, all things being equal. The quality of my relationships is proportionate to my inputs like quality time, positive speaking and positive attitude. If, as a nation, we sow seeds of discord in the next 2 years, we chose to reap fruits of violence in the 2017 elections. Disagreeing with the law won’t change your situation.
Goals are like magnets – the bigger they are, the stronger the pull. But not many people know how to identify their life goals (calling). Fewer know how to set goals. You see, ladies and gentlemen, as John C. Maxwel argues, when there is faith in the future, there is power in the present.
The good news is that there are people around you who can help you get what you want. You are not alone in this walk. Everyone feels like quitting at some point. Just like running marathon, it’s essential to get that person that often tells you, ‘keep running, you will make it. Don’t drop out of the race!’
Through two complementary tools that I developed, “Personal Accountability Matrix (PAM)” and “My Life Star” I would like to help you to identify your life goal and track your progress on a daily basis with accountability as a core pillar. Believe me, these tools will focus the creative power within you to the extent you will no longer pursue success; you will attract success henceforth.
