Have you climbed up the ranks pushing down others to get corporate recognition? Have you crushed someone’s spirit to ensure they don’t outshine your corporate star? Do you get things done by your subordinates and take all the glory with you but when they err, you reprimand on the spot without a 2nd chance to impress your ever-demanding seniors?
Are you the threat panting manager who stands by the door of your subordinates’ offices swaging your German car keys? Never going on leave because you neither trust others nor delegate duties? You are larger than life and you pride as much that they can’t deliver anything in your absence.
If this describes you, you are not a leader, you are a manipulator. Your focus is on preserving your position not your legacy. Your inner insecurities are poison to your down-lines. In the privacy of their thoughts, they curse your down fall.
True leadership is not judged by how many people serve you but how many people you serve. While insecure leaders focus on preserving their positions, secure leaders focus on developing others. Your leadership will never be judged by how many people you trade but by how many people you develop. The ultimate test of leadership is when your successor outperforms you. They take the organization to a whole new level because they are fresher, more energetic and more motivated.
From today’s daily challenge, are you a secure leader?
I’d like to challenge your conventions on corporate leadership this coming Friday the 2nd Sept at KICC – Amphitheatre from 6pm to 8pm. I’d like to help you rise up to your true calling of helping everyone under your watch to rise up to higher levels. This is the only sure way for you to operate at much higher levels. In tomorrow’s Daily Sense, I’ll write on, “Take Charge of Your Life.”
