Principle 7: Empathize with your child
To empathize means to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another, and feeling with the heart of another. Empathy is like giving someone a psychological hug. It is Abraham Lincoln who said, “I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better.”
Having a soft heart in a cruel world is not weakness, it is courage. Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to a better understanding of ourselves. Recall those timeless words of Mother Teresa, “If you judge people, there is no time to love them.”
Q. As a child, how did you want to be corrected by your parents when you were in the wrong?
